About the Reaction Time Test

This reaction time test measures the millisecond delay between a visual stimulus (the box flashing from red to green) and your physical motor response (clicking your mouse or tapping your screen).

Across millions of recorded test attempts worldwide, the median human reaction time is approximately 250–273 milliseconds. Professional athletes, esports players, and Formula 1 drivers typically score between 100 and 170 milliseconds.

How Hardware & Latency Affect Your Score

In addition to measuring your biological neural reaction speed, your score is affected by the latency of your computer, monitor, and input device:

  • Monitor Refresh Rate: A standard 60Hz display introduces up to 16.6ms of frame delay between when the pixel turns green and when your eye perceives it. A 144Hz monitor reduces this to 6.9ms, and a 240Hz monitor to 4.1ms.
  • Input Device Latency: Wireless mice or trackpads can introduce 10–30ms of polling latency. A high-polling (1000Hz+) wired gaming mouse provides the most accurate reading.
  • Television / Display Lag: Testing on modern smart TVs without Game Mode can add up to 100–150ms of input delay!
